When Do I Need Crown & Bridge Treatment?
Crown and Bridge Treatment may be the right restorative option for you if you have experienced tooth loss. Did you know that one missing tooth can cause a myriad of problems such as shifting of the remaining teeth, decay, periodontal disease and bone loss? Ask your AXIS Dental Group oral health professional how Dental Crowns and Tooth Bridges can help maintain optimum dental health.
What is a Crown?
A crown – sometimes referred to as a “cap” – is used to strengthen, restore or improve the appearance of your natural tooth. After carefully preparing the tooth, the crown is placed on top, similar to a thimble being placed over a finger. In addition to being used to strengthen a tooth, crowns serve many important functions. One of the most common is to support the tooth when there is no longer sufficient tooth structure left to place a filling. Crowns may also be used to protect the structure of a tooth that is fractured or broken. Dental Crowns can also be placed on top of a Dental Implant to create a tooth-like shape and structure that provides for a more functional tooth.
For superior aesthetics, full ceramic crowns and porcelain fused-to-metal crowns are designed to look like your natural teeth. Gold crowns may be used for extra strength, usually on the back teeth, where chewing surfaces are under the most pressure. We also offer CEREC restoration for durable, natural-looking results. What is a Bridge?
A bridge is a custom-made device anchored to neighbouring teeth that replaces one or more missing teeth. When a lost tooth is replaced with a bridge, the teeth on either side of the missing one must be carefully prepared to serve as anchors/abutments to hold the prosthetic replacement teeth in place. The type of crown and bridge material used depends on:
- Aesthetics – colour match and appearance
- Form – the contour of the bridge must confirm to the surrounding tissue in a natural healthy position
- Function – chewing and biting accuracy
