Guatemala, a country entrenched in civil war for the better half of the 20th century. Thousands of children orphaned. Thousands of women widowed. Chichicastenango, is an indigenous town remotely located northwest of Guatemala City. A worn and torn land rich in Mayan culture and traditions. An AXIS Dental team consisting of Dr. Paul Faerman, Ioana Caracas-Lupu and Lisa Gregory, with aid from Pray America/Manos de Jesus, embarked on a volunteer mission with the goal of providing free dental care to the less privileged, otherwise mostly resigned to suffering. With a complete lack of educational and preventative programs, disease runs rampant. In addition to restorative, surgical and prophylactic dental treatment, provided to over 200 patients, the group contributed at the local feeding program and children’s shoe factory.
