What Are Wisdom Teeth?

The last molars to erupt in the back of your mouth are commonly known as the third molars, or Wisdom Teeth. They usually begin coming in between the ages of 17 to 21 – often considered the “coming of age” in a person’s life. Most people have four wisdom teeth, but some adults have more and some have less.

How Do You Know if Wisdom Teeth Will Be Problematic?

The only way to know for sure whether your Wisdom Teeth will be problematic is to visit your Dental Care professional for a consultation, x-ray and oral examination. Your Dentist will check for signs that your Wisdom Teeth are starting to come through (erupt), whether they are problematic – with or without pain – or impacted.

What Does Impacted Mean?

The term impacted means “trapped” in the jaw bone due to how it is developing or has developed in the jaw. This “impaction” may be a source of pain and may also lead to infection. The wisdom tooth itself may also crowd or damage the molar next to it and its roots, or damage the jaw bone and its nerves. When the wisdom tooth grows toward adjacent teeth, it can trap plaque and debris making your teeth more vulnerable to decay.

How Many People Have Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

Roughly 85% of the population are affected by impacted Wisdom Teeth requiring extraction.

Don’t worry. You can trust the Dental Professionals at AXIS Dental Group to have your best interests at heart. If your Wisdom Teeth require extraction, we’ll take great care of you, right here in our office, and ensure your comfort every step of the way. There’s no need to go anywhere else.
