A Refresher on Brushing and Flossing
April is the month when the Canadian Dental Association and dental professionals across Canada promote the importance of good oral health with all patients, especially new patients. Here is a reminder of the best practices for good oral health.
Oral Hygiene 101:
Brushing and flossing remove the bacteria that promote tooth decay and the plaque that can cause gum disease. The Canadian Dental Association and all of the dental professionals at AXIS Dental Group recommend that you:
- Brush after every meal, but at least twice a day including just before bed.
- Use a soft-bristle brush with rounded bristles, small enough to reach your back teeth.
- Use a toothpaste with fluoride. Check the package for the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) seal.
- Brush for at least two minutes.
- Gently brush your tongue.
- Replace your toothbrush every season orif yours looks worn, or if you’ve had a cold (bristles can harbour germs that may re-infect you).
- Floss. Brushing is not enough. More than a third of your tooth surface is not get a thorough cleaning with brushing alone.
- If you have wide spaces between your teeth, wear braces, or have had gum surgery, consider using an inter-dental cleaner or proximal brush instead of floss.
- Brushing and flossing aren’t complicated, but technique does matter. Ask your dentist or dental hygienist for a lesson.
