The third molars in the back of your mouth are commonly known as “wisdom teeth”. They usually appear between 17 and 21 years of age. Wisdom teeth do not have to be extracted if they have completely grown in, are positioned correctly in relation to opposing teeth, and are not causing any problems.
What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?
“Impacted” means trapped in the jawbone (stuck and unable to grow properly). Impaction may create pain. It may also lead to recurring gum infections. Improperly erupting wisdom teeth may crowd or damage teeth surrounding them or damage the jawbone and its nerves. Wisdom teeth that grow toward adjacent teeth can trap plaque and debris. The result can be premature tooth decay. This is when it’s time to consider wisdom tooth extraction.
How Long Does It Take To Remove Wisdom Teeth?
Usually the wisdom tooth extraction process takes less than 30 minutes for all four teeth. We understand that for some patients, a visit to the Dentist can be a stressful experience. That’s why we offer several different levels of sedation to ensure you feel safe and comfortable. Always.
How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed/Extracted?
Extraction is a fairly common procedure. Roughly 85% of people are affected by impacted wisdom teeth. Most extractions require only Local Anesthesia, an injection to numb the gum around the tooth being extracted. At AXIS Dental Group we also offer General Anesthesia (being completely asleep and unconscious), Deep Sedation (unconscious but not in as deep a state of sedation) or Conscious Sedation (you remain conscious and responsive). Sitting down with your Dental Professional and having an open discussion about wisdom teeth extractions – or extractions of any kind, is always recommended.
