“Impacted” means trapped in the jawbone (stuck and unable to grow properly). Impaction may create pain. It may also lead to recurring gum infections. Improperly erupting wisdom teeth may crowd or damage teeth surrounding them or damage the jawbone and its nerves. Wisdom teeth that grow toward adjacent teeth can trap plaque and debris. The result can be premature tooth decay. This is when it’s time to consider wisdom tooth extraction.

Extraction is a fairly common procedure. Roughly 85% of people are affected by impacted wisdom teeth. Most extractions require only Local Anesthesia, an injection to numb the gum around the tooth being extracted.
