Like many Canadians, you may have a dental plan through your employer, union, or provincial government. At Axis Dental Group, we do our best to helpyou understand your plan, however its important you know are aware of your benefits as you are responsible for any services that are not covered.
This fact sheet can help you understand your plan.
First, remember that a dental plan and a treatment plan are two different things:
- a dental plan is a means to help you to pay for your dental treatment. Employers provide health and dental benefits for a variety of reasons, including the promotion of good health.
- a treatment plan is the personal plan you and your dentist develop together to meet your oral health needs. It serves as your road map to good oral health and should not be limited by what a dental plan will cover.
If you have a dental plan:
It’s up to you as a full partner in your oral health care to know how your plan works. Read the booklet or other materials available from your provider.
Checklist
- Some things you need to know about your plan:
- What is covered each year? (you should have a booklet from your employer with a break down of this information)
- Is there a deductible? (This is a yearly fee that you must pay, some plans have an amount for single and family coverage)
- Is there a total dollar limit on my coverage? (This is your individual MAXIMUM, or how much you can spend each year)
- Will I still be covered if I change jobs? (You must check with your employer to ensure your coverage carries over, otherwise you may end up with unexpected charges owing)
- To what extent am I covered for cleanings and X- rays? (cleanings are considered PERIO UNITS, some Insurance plances a specific number of “units” and others have NO LIMIT)
- To what extent am I covered for dental treatments such as fillings and root canals? (there will be specific % that your insurance covers for these treatments.)
What about other treatments such as bridges and crowns, dentures, and oral surgery? (Most of these procedures are considered MAJOR Treatment and there will be a different % that the plan may cover verses your BASIC Treatment, like Exams, x-rays, fillings etc..)
Can I choose my own dentist? (Some plans may restrict you to a list of approved Dentists. for example some plans will only provide coverage if you are seen by a periodontist (specialist).) Axis Dental Group accepts all Group Benefits through an employer.
