The Root Canal Process
A Root Canal is an endodontic treatment that is used to repair and save a tooth that is infected or badly decayed. The step-by-step process of a Root Canal procedure includes removing infected or injured tissue (pulp) from inside the crown and roots of a tooth. Once cleaned, the canal is disinfected, shaped, filled and sealed with natural rubber-like material. The opening of the tooth is then sealed with either a temporary or permanent filling to prevent future infection. Then the tooth is restored so it will function much like your natural tooth did when it was healthy.
Does Having a Root Canal Hurt?
Every patient is different. Generally when someone is experience pain it is because the infection has reached the nerve. Here at AXIS Dental Group, we take the time to understand your concerns and offer appropriate treatments to ensure your overall comfort throughout the procedure. Some patients would prefer to be sedated or completely asleep during root canal therapy. Others are fine with localized freezing. Severe pain and swelling are uncommon in Root Canal therapy. Can I Delay a Root Canal?
Simply put, no. There are different reasons why a Root Canal may be recommended. If your Dentist or Endodontist has discovered a cavity and you prolong treatment, the cavity will become bigger, the tooth itself will become thin and it will fracture, eliminating restoration options. If you have an abscess, the infection could spread to adjacent teeth, gums and throughout the rest of your body. In both cases, the condition will not remedy itself. A dental solution is needed. Delaying treatment could result in discomfort and pain, making sleep difficult. Left untreated, your condition could ultimately lead to bone and tooth loss.
