If you want your child’s teeth to last a lifetime, start forming good dental hygiene habits early. When a child is taught a new skill at an early age, he is likely to continue this behavior throughout adulthood. Teaching proper brushing and flossing techniques is important for developing good oral hygiene habits.
Generally, parents should start flossing their children’s teeth when two teeth touch. This usually happens first with back teeth. With guidance and encouragement, your children will learn how to do it for themselves. Using a dental flossette or floss pic may help you and your child become accustomed to a flossing routine. Continue to inspect/supervise flossing until your children are able to do a thorough job on their own.
The A B Cs of Flossing
A: Hold a short length of floss between the thumb and index finger, twining it around the middle finger and using pointer finger and thumbs at each end to gain better control. Be careful not to apply too much pressure when inserting the floss between the child’s teeth.
B: Adjust the floss into a ‘C’ shape curve around each tooth and slide it up and down gently along the side of the tooth and under the gumline.
C: A new section of floss should be used for each tooth to avoid reinsertion of food and plaque.
D: An interdental brush can be used to clean between tooth surfaces that have space.
Regular dental exams and cleanings for kids should start at about 3 years of age, but can start as early as the first tooth eruption in your child’s mouth. If you notice a dark shadow or hole in their teeth beforehand, please bring them in immediately.
