Dental Care for Kids
We suggest that you start regular dental exams and cleanings at about 3 years of age. However, should you notice a dark shadow, brown spot, or hole in a tooth, please make an appointment to bring them in as soon as possible.
Because young children are not able to clean their own teeth, the parent or caregiver must do it for them when they are very young, and then with them as they grow. Checking and coaching your child as they brush their teeth is the beginning of good oral health habits that will last a lifetime!
How to Clean Your Baby’s Teeth
Get into the habit of cleaning your child’s mouth even before they have teeth. This will keep his or her mouth clean and give baby teeth a chance to grow. You want to wipe clean all parts of the gums and teeth. Here’s how:
- Lie your baby in a comfortable place
- Make sure you can see into your baby’s mouth
- Use a soft baby brush or wrap your finger in a clean, damp washcloth. Then, brush or wipe your baby’s gums and teeth
- Do not use toothpaste until your child has teeth
Toothpastes for Toddlers
There are many different brands of toothpaste you can buy for children without fluoride. Fluoride is something you don’t want children to ingest/swallow. Begin using fluoridated toothpaste only when they are old enough to know how to rinse water in their mouth without swallowing it.
When Should Children Start Brushing Their Own Teeth?
- Children under 3 years of age should have their teeth brushed by an adult, but children should certainly participate in the process.
- Children from 3 to 6 years of age should be assisted by an adult in brushing their teeth.
- Flossing should begin when two teeth touch. This typically happens with back teeth first. With guidance and encouragement, your child will learn how to brush and floss properly for themselves.
- When your child can write (not print) his or her name, they are ready to do a good job brushing and flossing. Parents should continue checking and coaching children through these important years so they learn proper oral hygiene techniques.
At AXIS Dental Group, we understand that going to the dentist for the first time might be a little scary for children. That’s why we introduce children to dentistry with a “fun visit” to our office. This complimentary visit allows children to become comfortable with their dental surroundings. Children love to explore our playroom where they can read, watch TV or play video games. We want your children to become familiar our office, our wonderful staff, dental terminology, and dental technology and equipment. We love providing dental care for children and reward them with a goodie bag after every visit!
