Anthropologists believe that wisdom teeth (the third set of molars) were the evolutionary answer to man’s early diet of coarse, rough food – like leaves, roots, nuts and meats – which required more shredding and chewing power and resulted in excessive wear of the teeth.
Today’s diet of comparatively softer foods and inventions such as knives and forks, make the third set of molars unnecessary, and yet for most of us, they still appear during our late teens or early adulthood.
Wisdom teeth extraction may be recommended by your AXIS Dental Group Dental Professional if you experience symptoms of pain, repeated infections, gum disease, cysts, extensive tooth decay. A thorough oral exam will be completed first, followed by x-rays, at the discretion of your Dental Professional. Treatment options will then be offered.
If extraction is recommended, the surgery will be performed in our office, under appropriate anesthesia to maximize your comfort.
