The Signs of Impacted Wisdom Teeth
The third molars in the back of your mouth are called “wisdom teeth” but have nothing to do with intelligence. If wisdom teeth don’t have room to grow properly they can cause problems such as crowding, difficulty with daily hygiene, oral infections, extensive tooth decay, or cysts affecting the roots of teeth. Some wisdom teeth don’t erupt through the gums, but rather are trapped in the jawbone – or impacted.
What’s the Procedure for Removing Wisdom Teeth?
Extraction is a fairly common procedure for wisdom teeth. Approximately 85% of the population is affected by one or more impacted wisdom teeth. The wisdom tooth extraction procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes for all four teeth. An injection is given to numb the gums around the tooth being extracted, then an incision is made in the gum tissue and the tooth is removed.
Most oral extractions require only Local Anesthesia, but we also offer General Anesthesia (being completely asleep and unconscious), Deep Sedation (unconscious but not in as deep a state of sedation) or Conscious Sedation (you remain conscious and responsive). Learn more about Sleep Dentistry.
